Societal Makeup
The Alfadorian Star Empire was organized into a caste system. While no one was explicitly locked to the caste they were born into, moving up wasn't particularly easy.
Royalty
Consisted exclusively of the Royal Family of Empress Serena Alfon, and the families directly intertwined with her own. Royalty were the only individuals who could replace Serena in the event of her death, though it was believed widely throughout Alfador that she was immortal and thus the title of Royalty was seen more-so as ceremonial than a functional societal rank.
High Nobility
Consisted mostly of peered, established families and geneologies tracing back centuries. Most High Nobility had roots to the original Holy Alfadorian Empire's High Nobility. High Nobility were generally picked for the highest ranking government positions, such as Governers, Lords, Marshalls, and Ministers. High Nobility was strictly tracked by blood and merit. Those born into High Nobility who did not show the proper aptitude would be downgraded to Low Nobility.
Low Nobility
Consisted of the vast majority of Alfadorian nobility. Low Nobles were the leaders of the Empire at all echelons of activity except for the topmost government. Low nobility consisted of similar positions as High Nobility, but usually within the scope of a planet or smaller. They also consisted of Knights, Company Executives, Scientists, Psions, Industry leaders, High Priests, and anyone else related by direct bloodline to a Low or High noble family (even if they were not operating in a leadership role). Individuals could be promoted into Low Nobility by sponsorship of a Noble House, and could promote up to High Nobility through marriage, sponsorship, or appointment.
Admiralty
Consisted of the highest ranking members of the Alfadorian Military that were not nobility. Admiralty were generally given extremely similar rights and resources as Low Nobility and often promoted into nobility after their careers were over.
Military Citizen
Individuals of the military were highly valued in Alfador, and none moreso than those who earned MIlitary Citizenship. To earn this prestigious and desirable rank, a Citizen had to serve 15 years in the military (there were some exceptions to this rule, though, including postumous promotions). Military Citizens enjoyed access to many of the same rights, resources, and opportunities as Low Nobility, and could often apply to promote into nobility if they showed aptitude - especially in situations where they could establish hereditary relations to a Noble family or earned the sponsorship of a Noble house.
Free Citizen
Free Citizens were the rank of the bulk of Alfadorians. They all enjoyed an exceptional standard of living on average, varying from sector to sector. Free Citizens had complete autonomy to live their lives. Free Citizens took aptitude tests when they were younger to help them decide on their careers but were not required anything specifically in most cases. Free Citizenship was inherited by birth, or earned through Citizen Service by Non-free Citizens. It generally could only be taken away by criminal infractions, refusal of military service, or situations of government need.
Non-free Citizen
Non-free Citizens were generally the families of immigrants, criminals, or consisted of indentured servants of the state. They enjoyed the same rights and generally the same standard of living as Free Citizens, but were not given autonomy in their lives. Non-free citizens were the first choice for conscription in the Alfadorian Military during drafts. Promoting to Free Citizenship was an often challenging bureaucratic process requiring aptitude, merit, and loyalty screenings.
Non-citizen
Anyone who was not born in Alfador was a non-citizen. They enjoyed most of the same human rights as a citizen, but had no guarantees of citizenship benefits - such as universal base income, housing, transportation, or employment. Non-citizens could apply for citizenship and were generally granted it automatically, becoming Non-free Citizens.
